After 25 years of running and growing Results Software, I had thought that I've learned all that is needed to hire and manage sales staff, mostly the hard way. Apparently not so. I am glad that I've taken the time to read this invaluable book! It has been an eye-opener with real practical advice and ideas that we have already put to good use!I commend Matt for writing an engaging and easy to read book, as it is extremely well organized and logical in its approach to a complex subject that is illusive to master, even after 25 years! I appreciate Matt's superb style in not trying to "lecture" and try to convince the reader how smart he is - instead he focuses his energies on explaining WHAT the reader needs to know and WHY things are the way they are. He explains typical company sales processes and goals (company motivator) and places these in contrast with the typical sales person's motivator, explaining that not all "sales people" are the same. He explains and highlights attributes to the various personalities and details approaches of how to understand them, hire them and how to compensate them. It turns out that we are not unique in having hired our "first" sales person "multiple times" (you have to read the book, to appreciate this one.)
The only negative I have about this book is wondering what took Matt so long to write it! The months of wasted time that we experienced over the years, hoping that "we found the right one", and the tens of thousands of dollars down the drain could have been averted based on the wisdom and simple facts in this book.
Would you buy a car that your livelihood depends on without reading a guide and studying up on what it takes to make the right critical decision? It is like that with Sales People, they're not all the same.
I strongly recommend Matt's book to any business owner, especially Small Business owners, as well as any sales manager (regardless whether they wanted to be a sales manager, or like many found themselves becoming one.)
